Quantity rules
Set a price ladder that lowers the unit price as the quantity rises, for a product, a category, a schema or a service.

On this page
- Why
- A hundred off costs less to supply than one, whoever orders it.
- What
- A pricing rule holds quantity breaks for every customer on one scope.
- How
- Open
/app/catalog?tab=pricingand choose New rule under Pricing rules; rules are for admins and owners.
Create a rule
- Step 1.
Give it a Name, such as Volume discount, and pick the Scope (product, category, schema or service; a configurator rule reaches no line today) and what it Applies to.
- Step 2.
Leave Starts and Ends empty for always on, or set the dates it runs between.
- Step 3.
Under Tiers, enter a Minimum quantity and either a % discount or a fixed price. Choose Add tier for each further break.
- Step 4.
Keep Active ticked and choose Save rule.
How a tier applies
- The line takes the tier with the highest minimum quantity it reaches. Below the first tier, the rule does nothing.
- A percentage discounts the price after any percentage special price. A fixed price is the unit price at that quantity.
- Only the most specific scope's rules are considered, even when none of their tiers is reached, and only one rule applies: on a tie, the lowest price.
- Tiers are stored in ascending order, whatever order they were typed in.
What the checks refuse
| Mistake | Message |
|---|---|
| No tiers | Add at least one quantity break. |
| A quantity of zero or a fraction | Break 1: the quantity must be a whole number of 1 or more. |
| A discount over 100% | Break 1: a discount is between 0% and 100%. |
| Two tiers on one quantity | Two breaks both start at 10. Each one needs its own quantity. |
| An end before the start | The end date is before the start date. |
Where the ladder shows
A product line in the quote editor shows its Volume price ladder under How this price was calculated: only the quantities that beat the price for one. Tick Show volume price breaks on a quote to print the ladder on the PDF.
