Pricing rules and the resolution order

Why

The same product, for the same customer, at the same quantity must price the same whoever or whatever priced it.

What

One resolver prices every product, design and service line: the AI's draft quotes, the quote editor and the order editor.

How

It runs the four steps below in order and stores each step on the line.

The order

1. Base price. A catalogue product's price; for a product priced by dimension, the price at the dimension asked for; for a saved design, the design worked out again at the line quantity; for a service line, the service's price.
2. The customer's special price, one only. Of the customer's special prices that fit the line and are in their dates, the most specific wins: product, then category, then schema, then the whole customer (a service line: service, then whole customer; a design line: whole customer only). A fixed price replaces the price; a percentage discounts it.
3. One quantity break, skipped when step 2 set a fixed price. Of the active rules on the most specific scope that fits the line, each offers its highest tier the quantity reaches; if several rules tie on that scope, the lowest price wins and the step says so.
4. Floor at zero. A rule that would take the price below nothing is floored at zero, as a visible step.

Two rules of one kind never stack. A special price and a quantity break do: the break applies to the special's result. The exception is a fixed special price, which is an agreed figure no break may move.

Service and design lines

On a service line only a percentage special price applies; a fixed special price for that service is ignored. A line from a saved design takes a whole customer discount and no catalogue quantity rule: its quantity breaks live in the design itself.

After the resolver

On the line itself a person can still set a discount, type a line total or type a unit price. A typed price is added to the chain as a manual step, so the steps above it are never lost.

See how a line was priced

Choose the icon labelled How this price was calculated beside a quote line's price. It shows when a step changed the price, the price was typed or the line has a volume ladder. Each step shows its name and the change it made, and the chain is stored on the line, so it reads the same months later.
